Readcon reopened for business! Welcome back, all!

by Sirius on December 23, 2008, 09:29:00 PMWelcome to the Reading Consortium!
Perhaps you've clicked a link accidentally. Perhaps you're wondering how you've got here. Perhaps you even planned to visit. No matter how you managed to get here, you'll be wondering the same thing as everybody else: where am I?
The simple answer is: the Reading Consortium...
We are a website dedicated to promoting writing in the Harry Potter fanfiction genre. But how do we do this?
As you can see, we have a main page maintained by a group of dedicated authors. Here is a quick guide to the features:
Forums: An active, invite-only community of writers and reviewers. Critique stories still in their production stage, or gain valuable insight into how to improve your story from fellow authors and reviewers with an eye for detail. Discuss the articles displayed on the main page of Readcon.com with their creators and other members of the site, or contribute ideas for future articles or interviewees. To become a member, please fill in the short form at the top of the page.
Featured Article: We invite an author to write a relatively short article on a subject of their choosing, usually one in which they have expertise. This can be anything, as wide as writing a genre such as comedy and writing a story in a foreign language, or as narrow as choosing the best title for your story or examining punctuation for speech. With this feature, we hope to help prospective and existing authors with the questions they want answered.
Story of the Month: To further our goal of promoting writing, a member of staff will choose a story that they believe has been written to a high standard. A review will then be written about the story highlighting the strengths of the story, things it can improve on and a rating out of ten. We will then invite the author to make any additional comments. While this feature helps the author (even a little ego-boost can help!), it also has the added benefit of building up a catalogue of stories for all you rabid readers!
Rough Diamonds: Writing your first few stories is no easy task. In this feature, we will review stories that are: less well-known, shorter or newer in a similar way to 'Story of the Month'. The writer will once again be invited to add his/her own comments. With this feature, we hope to encourage the less experienced authors and provide readers with stories they have never before encountered.
Interviews: We invite an author, usually renowned in the fandom, to be subjected to a gruelling interview with one of our staff members! We try and find their inspiration for writing, authors they have been inspired by and their writing habits amongst other things. We hope that this is not only an enjoyable read for you guys but a helpful insight into the mind of people who write thousands of words per week and still have time to spare. Who better to pick up tips from than those who have trodden the beaten road to completing a story themselves?
We hope to update these features monthly, but we do have lives too (gasp!), so don't be put out if it takes a bit longer!
We hope you enjoy the Reading Consortium.
Yours,
The Staff

by
Richard
Whenever I write, I tend to fall into a dozen little pit traps and snares that I really should know how to avoid. Whether it's punctuation, ellipses or cramming redundant phrases into a paragraph, I tend to make mistakes that I should easily know how to avoid. Because of this I've decided to make a guide of sorts to avoid these snares...

By Taure
Is it possible to cast a spell on the internet? An intriguing question, if not a very pressing one. We traditionally think of spells as being cast on objects or people, but there is a wide variety of other useful applications for magic in the Harry Potter world. Through thinking of these, our view of the Harry Potter magic system is challenged as we begin to think about it in a new way.

By Taure
Incantations are a very important part of a wizard’s magic in the Harry Potter world. As far as we can tell, every spell has an incantation, whether it is verbal or non-verbal. But why is this so? Are the words really as important as they seem? And if they are, why do mere words hold so much power?
